Q&A: Matt Kisby – Hereward Radio

When were Hereward Radio founded, and what influenced you to start the project?
Hereward radio has been going approximately two years now and I started it because I had enjoyed being involved with community radio on the presenting sided and wanted a new challenge about creating a station. I also wanted a station that would offer an opportunity to all to get involved in radio regardless of ability and wanted to create something that would be an educational resource for the city

You’ve already done a lot of outside broadcasts and covered a lot of events – tell us about some of those…
We have covered the LQD Football trophy for 3 years now but have covered events as diverse as the Yaxley Festival where we interviewed Warwick Davis to charity events such as a Macmillan Cancer Support fundraiser. We have also broadcast from the Dementia Support Centre and the senior Stop Cafe

What are the long term goals for the station and what plans do you have in the short term?
Short term goals include working with more local schools and widening opportunity for anyone who wants to to produce a show. Long term we want to be the best local station we possibly can be!

Give us some examples of the shows that you have on the station…
Volunteers choose their own shows but so far we have a light hearted music quiz show, a heavy metal show, a youth music oriented show, a film and TV review show and a wrestling show with another one currently in development.

If someone is interested in hosting a show on the station, how would they go about getting involved?
To get involved the easiest way is to email the station on matthew@herewardcommunityradio.co.uk to arrange an informal chat and look around our studio

Do you offer full training – if so what does that training involve?
We offer a full and comprehensive free training package that is tailored to an individual’s needs so they are all different. We do support presenters well past the initial training period though until they are totally confident in how to produce a show

You covered the LFT last year – how did you think the day went as a whole?
All the Liquid Football Trophy events have been well organised helped to raise money for local charities and been great fun days out so we as a station have enjoyed being part of them. Little touches like medals and a trophy really add to the overall experience.

Your team, Hereward Radio fc reached the final in 2016, as opposed to finishing bottom of the group in 2015. Why didn’t you enter a fucking team this year to go one better?
We didn’t enter a team this year to give everyone else a chance!

Finally… who do you believe will win this year’s LFT?
Hereward Radio believes the winning team will be the team that wins

Tune in to Hereward’s live coverage of the LFT via the TuneIn App, Sunday June 25th at 11:00!
